OpenStreetMap

For the past days I have been working on a large shopping center in France. Indoor mapping, 3D mapping, micro-mapping… Lots of big improvements were made and now, the area is nearly perfect!

Overall view of the area on OSM. You can see the detailed greenery and parking aisle numbers even when zooming out. I believe this could be really useful for visitors who parked their car to go shopping, but then forgot where they parked: If they remember the alley number, a quick look at OSM will help!

Zooming in gives a better look at the parkings. You can see the shopping cart deposits (or trolley bays) scattered across the parking as well as the footways that cross the aisles, leading to the entrances of the mall. Bicycle parkings are also shown, and the greenery gets more detailed.

What is indoor has not been forgotten, by looking at indoor renderers such as OpenLevelUp, you can have a very neat view of the mall’s interior, with the corridors and various shops shown, as well as the five different entrances available.

Here is the display on OsmAnd.

And now for the best part: the 3D views! F4map gives an amazing overall view of the mall! You can see the street lamps, trees, hedges and shopping cart deposits, as well as a 3D view of the mall. (The orange wall colors look off, but they are like this in real life too!)

Here are a few more 3D views:

And that is all! This took me around 3500 edits over 17 changesets (view on OsmCha)

Thank you for reading!

Nicely done! Congrats!

I have a question about indoor mapping. How do you locate the shops inside the building? Do you have a mall map at hand when adding the shops?

Last time I was using Go Map!! to add shops inside a shopping complex. The GPS signal isn’t good enough and it’s confusing where to put the POI.

The mall has a map on information boards inside it. I took a picture of the map, underlayed and aligned it on JOSM to do edits

Very nice, thanks for sharing! The trick to underlay a picture of the map of the mall is smart. How do you do that? I know how to use aerial imagery but didn’t know you could use just any image.

Also, looking at the screenshots, it seemed like the “Pizza Pai” parking was missing a trema in “Pai”?

@o_andras One way to do it is to use JOSM with the PicLayer plugin.

This is super impressive. Looks like a fun project. What did you use for field surveys to ensure you had all the shops and entrances in the right location?

This is fantastic.
